1/28/12 - Thought some of the rain we had last week would fill up the lake some. Nope. In fact it might have even
lowered a little bit. One thing for sure, the water was cold. 45 degrees in some spots. Visibility was about a foot so
I didnt have the best expectations when launching this morning. Kick over to my usual starting point and flick the
plastic into the drink. After a couple lifts and drops a fish takes the bait and I'm bendo on a nice smallie.
Pretty good fight
from this fish, jumps
and hard runs till
she was lipped.
What a great way to
start the day. I had
not seen a
smallmouth in about
8-9 weeks of
fishing. Finally the
bronzeback shows
up and peels some
drag.
Normally you can tell a lot from the first fish of the day but this fish was relating to cover unlike the following 7
fish that would bite today. The pattern ended up being shallow and this caught me off guard. 45 degree water
with real low lake levels and fish are up tight. Huh? I wasnt complaining though as the next fish was a real solid
3#'r largemouth. Great fight, I'm not sure this fish had ever been caught before. It was pissed.
I would work this
pattern all the way
to a prime area I
couldnt wait to hit.
Once I got to the spot I setup at
an angle that would bring my
plastic right off the point and down
the slope. The bait sunk about
3-5ft and I see my backing twitch
on the surface. I immediately start
kicking and set the hook to make
sure I could pull this fish away
from any sunken rocks or trees
that might be under me. A few
tense moments later and I've got
my PB smallmouth. A little over
3#'s. So stoked!
You've seen it on just about every fishing show that targets smallies. Catch one, throw right back in as
usually there is atleast another one there. Made the same cast from the opposite side of the point and just
like last time the fish take the plastic around 5ft. Not quite as big but still a very nice fish and again keep in
mind I had not seen a smallmouth in 8 weeks. This was awesome!!
Bass fishing is so
cool. Not everyday
is like this but its
still good to know
that if you put your
time in eventually,
even on a day that
doesnt look good,
anything can
happen. 8 fish, 5
smallmouth.
WHAT??!!!
